For centuries sailing vessels sailed the Seven Seas but the rise of the steam brought about the gradual demise of the freight carrying sailing vessels due to the steam driven ships.
Life on board sailing ships was tough and full of hardships. Harsh discipline and a strict hierarchy dominated. Many crewmembers perished in bad weather and when they had to climb the rigging to reef sails. With the rise of the number of steam vessels transport by sea increased and many young sailing officers moved to the steam driven ships. Since the 1950s the Windjammers serve only as training ships both in Navies worldwide and as part of sail training schools and institutes. Is is then when they started calling them Tall Sips.
